Dr. Carlton Duff

Dr. Duff has a doctorate in Counselling Psychology from the University of Alberta. His practice is general in nature and he has expertise in the assessment and treatment of children, adolescents, and adults. His treatment approach is primarily cognitive-behavioural but he also draws from existential and experiential approaches. Dr. Duff has a particular interest in the treatment of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder, as well as in diagnostic assessment. He has experience working with parents, teachers, police, military (both members and their families), first responders, and physicians.

Prior to joining Vancouver Island Psychological Services, Dr. Duff was in private practice in Edmonton and an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Alberta. He has extensive experience in school-based assessment, and he has taught at the graduate level and provided clinical supervision for psychologists in training. He is also actively involved in research, with a current focus on the barriers and facilitators to effective mental health intervention and assessment outcomes. He has published on this topic, as well as on the factors in therapy relationship development and the impact of emotions such as shame on mental health. Dr. Duff is a Registered Psychologist in both British Columbia (#2279) and Alberta (#3861)
