Dr. Claire Barnes completed her PhD in Clinical and Counselling Psychology at the University of Toronto. Her research focused on the intersections of trauma and cultural diversity, and her doctoral dissertation explored how therapists take into account cultural diversity in their treatment of trauma.

Dr. Barnes primarily uses a Cognitive Behavioural approach and appreciates its flexibility in treating a wide range of concerns, practical approach to client change, and solid grounding in empirical research. She also draws upon Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy and mindfulness-based therapies depending on individual needs. She takes an empathetic and collaborative approach to therapy and views clients as active agents in their recovery. She believes that a strong therapeutic relationship is essential to healing, and prioritizes establishing safety and trust with her clients. Dr. Barnes is also committed to providing culturally sensitive therapy, and strives to create a therapeutic space where clients feel comfortable bringing up issues of identity, inequality, and difference.

Dr. Barnes completed her pre-doctoral residency at CBT Associates in Toronto, Ontario, focusing on the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, as well as trauma. She has also trained in various hospital and university settings where she worked with individuals presenting with anxiety (OCD, panic, worry, social anxiety, health anxiety), depression, relationship issues, insomnia, emotion regulation difficulties, and severe mental illness. She has a particular interest in treating trauma and the impact of trauma on people’s daily lives. She also has experience providing group therapy and has training in diagnostic and psychoeducational assessments.
